Counterfog is a system designed to provide a rapid response for collapsing all kind of air-borne dispersed agents –including Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear agents as well as solid micro-particles like those in smoke generated by Diesel engines and other non-exhaust traffic particles.
The system was mainly developed for removing CBRN agents from the air in case of a terrorist attack or accidental release. Additionally, it can be also applied to remove contaminating particles responsible for the spread of respiratory diseases in highly polluted cities.

The main objective of this project is to build and test a rapid response system for collapsing all kinds of dispersed agents.
Special Nozzle
Counterfog employs a special nozzle that is supplied with compressed air, drinking water and a disinfectant with which it forms a mist cone with a very particular dynamic capable of capturing and disinfecting contaminants.
This team engineered a nozzle able to provide a very especial fog and a laboratory to test the system under strict ethical, environmental, Health and safety control. At the micron scale particle size and air viscosity are determinant of the whole process. Counterfog water droplets aggregate and remove air borne particles quite efficiently. Counterfog has demonstrated to remove biological aerosols or radiactive particulates from air in the laboratory in less than a minute.


Biological Decontamination
Counterfog provides a rapid response to contamination by biological agents. It remove biological aerosols or radiactive particulates from air in the laboratory in less than a minute.
This system has been demonstrated in a laboratory with surrogates and simulants through several decontamination tests. The results show a reduction of two to three orders of magnitude. Additionally, other chemical elements such as disinfectants
